What the marathon taught me about shipping

May 12, 2026

In January I ran my first full marathon. 42.2km, one slightly delirious morning. I trained for months and still learned most of it in the last 10k.

Negative splits

The plan was simple: start slower than feels right, finish faster than feels possible. It maps almost perfectly onto shipping software — the instinct is to sprint at the start and burn out debugging at 2am. The runners who pass you at km 35 are the ones who held back at km 5.

Showing up beats intensity

More than a hundred activities over five years got me to the start line. Not the hero workouts — the boring Tuesday 5ks in the Mumbai humidity. Same with building: the compounding comes from showing up, not from the occasional all-nighter.

The medal's nice. The habit is the actual prize.
